University of Iowa hosts hip hop exhibit
IOWA CITY, Iowa — An exhibit chronicling moments in hip-hop’s early years will soon go on display.
The University of Iowa Museum of Art is hosting an exhibit called “Two Turntables and a Microphone: Hip-Hop Contexts featuring Harry Allen’s ‘Part of the Permanent Record: Photos from the Previous Century.’”
It opens Saturday and ends June 27.
The show has 40 photographs by Allen. He’s a hip-hop activist who traveled with the group Public Enemy in the 1980s and documented their rise to fame.
Members of the group, including its founders, will host a panel discussion in Iowa City later this month.
A director of the museum says the exhibit showcases the cultural phenomenon that is hip-hop.
