Vail gets permission to add high-speed ski lift
GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. — Vail Mountain has won authorization from the U.S. Forest Service to add a high-speed ski lift, restaurant and maintenance facility, and to upgrade another lift and expand snowmaking.
White River National Forest Supervisor Scott Fitzwilliams said he has signed a record of decision authorizing the projects, all of which are within boundaries of the ski area’s permit to use forest land.
Fitzwilliams says Vail Mountain changed its original plans by scaling back snowmaking to address soils and watershed concerns, scrapping plans for a new catwalk due to potential impacts to lynx habitat, and moving the proposed restaurant to mid-mountain instead of the summit.
Objectors can appeal Fitzwilliams’ decision.
