Mermaid Parade 2010 Celebrations in Coney Island

New York (GaeaTimes.com) - One of the most beautiful summer events, Coney Island Mermaid Parade took place on 19th June 2010. This parade takes place at Coney Island every year. It began in the year of 1983 and it was conceptualized and organized by Dick Zigun. The 2010 Mermaid parade started at 2 pm at west 21st street and Surf Avenue. The direction was from east to west. Elastic flippers, shiny scales and widespread nudity enriched the parade. It is considered that Coney Island Mermaid Parade is nation’s greatest parade as well as one the most colorful event to welcome the summer.

This event pays homage to Coney Island’s forgotten Mardi grass which lasted from 1903 to 1954. In this time Coney Island was the amusement park of New York’s people. This parade reveals the artistic nature and the spirit of the Mardi grass. Parade participants generally use various kinds of hand made costumes as mermaids, Neptunes, various sea creatures, the wondering light house, occasional amusement rides, Coney Island postcard. The Coney Island parade celebrates the sand, sea the air as well as the history of mythology of the island. This parade sometimes attracts more than two thousand people to participate in it. The number of audiences is huge and it can be celebrated in different ways and the vehicles are also different, some for floats, some for groups and some for individual. The frolic music, eye catching dresses are really the main features of this parade. The parade is a family event. Some occasions like birthday celebration is done in this parade. In the past, David Byrne, Queen Latifah, Curtis Sliwa, Moby and Harvey Keitel participated in this event. The opening game Brooklyn Cyclones and the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus are also most entertaining event of this function.
