Buffalo to get passport office

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A new federal passport office will open in Buffalo later this year, giving those near western New York’s four busy border crossings quick access to the travel document.

Authorities said Wednesday the new downtown office will allow people to obtain a passport within hours of applying. Right now the nearest office to apply in person is in New York City. Passports can take four-to-six weeks by mail.

The Buffalo office is scheduled to open in late September or early October. Western New York Congressmen Chris Lee and Brian Higgins petitioned Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for it last March after new rules took effect requiring all U.S. citizens to present a passport or other secure document to re-enter the country.
