Cameron: Wish you were here, in Britain
LONDON — Prime Minister David Cameron is urging British tourists to spend their vacation in the U.K., helping to spur the country’s fragile economic recovery.
Cameron said Thursday that he’s asked tourism minister John Penrose to work up ideas on how to increase domestic tourism.
Britons made 126 million overnight trips inside the U.K. last year, spending about 22 billion pounds (US$35 billion).
Cameron says people don’t adequately appreciate Britain’s natural beauty — pointing out that a Mediterranean beach in the movie “Shakespeare in Love,” was actually in eastern England, and an east Asian shoreline in “Die Another Day,” was on England’s southern coast.
Cameron’s office says he and his family will spend their own summer vacation in Cornwall, southern England.
