Anglo-Saxon treasure to remain in local UK museums
LONDON — A fundraising campaign to keep a huge collection of Anglo-Saxon gold in the area where it was unearthed has raised enough money for the treasure hoard to be kept in two central England museums.
Government trusts and the public chipped in to meet the 3.3 million pound ($4.9 million) purchase price.
The Staffordshire Hoard — the largest find of Anglo-Saxon gold ever recorded — will reside in museums in Birmingham and Stoke-on-Trent in England’s West Midlands, near where the collection was found.
An amateur treasure-hunter searching a farmer’s field with a metal detector unearthed the unprecedented archaeological find of 1,500 pieces of Anglo-Saxon gold and precious stones in July. The treasure trove is thought to date from the seventh century.
